'Antara' Kyra Lober

Artist. Somatic practitioner. Healer. Teacher.

Kyra Lober is the creator of Body Being & Heart, Transformational Arts for body and spirit. Her life and her work have been one long exploration of anatomical structure, felt experience and awareness.

Body Being & Heart is all about experiencing your feelings through your body — and embodying your Spirit.

Chapter one

The artist

Kyra likes to say she danced on Broadway — in her mother's womb. Her parents were in theatre; she followed them, not onto the commercial stage but into contemporary dance as a concert artist and choreographer.

She graduated from New York City's High School of Performing Arts, and holds a B.A. and M.A. in Dance from the University of California, Los Angeles, where her teachers included the neuroscientist Dr. Valerie Hunt, Gus Solomons Jr. and her lifelong friend Malcolm McCormick.

She received grants and scholarships throughout her dance career, including a Rockefeller Foundation Grant. Her work was seen on CBC television, at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum, and she choreographed for other companies including Toronto's Dance Makers and Robert Joffrey's Joffrey II. Her solo concerts of TAV, New Music & Dance, partnered by her husband, the musician Bob Becker of Nexus, were reviewed in the New York Times.

Chapter two

The body

Then, in her late twenties, came what Kyra calls the Game Changer. Pain that began in her lower back spread until dancing became impossible. It took a year to diagnose: rheumatoid arthritis with ankylosing spondylitis, at 29.

The medication she was given altered her consciousness so much that she had a car accident reversing out of a parking space. She needed another way. She explored physical and energetic therapies, and trained in the ones she found effective.

She got well. And she still dances.

Chapter three

The practitioner

Kyra is a certified Upledger CranioSacral therapist and trained in Brain Therapy with Bruno Chikly. She studied advanced CranioSacral techniques including 'Touching the Brain', working with neurological pathways.

She apprenticed with Dr. Ken Koles in unwinding the meridians with CranioSacral Therapy and Chinese acupuncture principles, and assists his international seminars, 'Vibrations and Frequencies'. She is a certified practitioner of Shiatsu.

Somatic education is another field she trained in extensively: she studied with Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais and is an Awareness Through Movement teacher, and is a certified practitioner and teacher of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's Body-Mind Centering.

Chapter four

The spiritual journey

Kyra has travelled the world on her spiritual path and come home to the pathless path — the journey into the mystery of life. Along the way she explored crystals and energy healing as personal research, and had transformative experiences that heightened her intuitive abilities.

She integrates those years of study and travel into her approach, Body Being & Heart Somatic Alchemy. Spirit is the context.

Chapter five

The teacher

Over the years Kyra has steadily evolved Body Being & Heart, providing therapeutic treatments and professional trainings, primarily in Montreal and now online worldwide.

She is also the author of 'Adventures of Alice Wonderbar', a romantic spiritual fantasy about healing and freedom.
